Here is the reference image I used for this painting. As you can see, I modified it quite a bit.

I started out using the grid method to get the placement and proportions of Bella Lugosi’s face.

I wasn’t happy with how that looked, so I put the reference image away, and started making my own changes to make the drawing more dramatic.

I was going to paint the entire background deep red, but it looked so good with just a red splash.
